The IRT Returns to Utah for the MonaVie Salt Lake City IRT ProAm
Lead organizer and self-described hardcore player for about two years, Brian Griffiths introduced professional racquetball to the area in 2010, hosting the Mitch Williams and Shane Vanderson RacquetballU clinic before inviting the world’s top competitors to this inaugural tournament. “The popularity has infused our local community of thousands to offer their incredible help and support for the event through private donations, sponsorships, and hundreds of registrations.”
“I was excited to get the call,” said Brian Gill, Senior Director of Corporate Communications for title sponsor MonaVie. Gill, who has played for twenty years, saw a natural fit between the sport and their product. “A great racquetball player personifies speed, agility, power, and coordination. I like to think that MonaVie is a company with similar attributes. We listen intently to our distributors and partner with our Scientific Advisory Board to provide a variety of body-beneficial products in seventeen markets around the world. MonaVie is extremely proud to be a sponsor of the first-ever tier 1 professional racquetball tournament in Utah.”
Griffiths appreciates the financial and practical support from MonaVie, other donors, and the volunteers. “I couldn’t do it without my coach Brad Brumbaugh who has been right with me from the beginning.” Ray Griffiths, Racquetball Director at SportsMall has also played a key role. “Ray has been playing competitive racquetball nationally his whole life. Now he dedicates his efforts to support the events, host tournaments, teach lessons, and run leagues. The SportsMall is 100% behind the event and have been great to work with.”
With the men’s professional International Racquetball Tour (IRT) semifinal and championship match both held on Saturday, local media coverage, a live broadcast on the IRT Network, Play the Pros, a potluck, auction, and almost 200 players participating from the twenty clubs in the Salt Lake Valley area, Griffiths hired Kim Roy to help manage the wide variety of activities. “She’s one of the world’s best tournament directors with a slew of pro tournament experience, and we’re excited to have her on board as our Tournament Director.”
The widespread support for the MonaVie SLC Pro/Am demonstrates the passion many, like Brian Gill, share for hitting a small rubber ball around the twenty-by-forty foot court. “Racquetball is one of the great lifetime sports—a sport that can typically be played and enjoyed throughout one’s entire life. This same philosophy rings true with MonaVie’s motto of ‘A More Meaningful Life.’ We believe that we are improving people’s quality of life—for the rest of their lives—through our unique products and rewarding business opportunity.”
