Carson Wins 2016 USA Racquetball National Singles, Ganim Inducted to USAR HOF
The Men’s Championship Final at the 2016 USA Racquetball National Singles Championships was an ALL HEAD Penn affair. Rocky Carson (Ladera Ranch, CA) and Jose Diaz (Stockton, CA) of The Reaching Your Dream Foundation cruised through their halves of the draw to meet in the finals with a National Championship on the line. Carson beat Chris Crowther and Luis Avila while Diaz defeated Nicholas Riffel and doubles partner Jake Bredenbeck.
The event served as the final stage for the selection of the U.S. National Team that will represent the United States at the World Championships in Colombia in July. In the final in Denver, Carson prevailed over Diaz 15-10, 15-2 in the HEAD Penn final to earn a spot on his 19th U.S. National Team.
The win capped a successful indoor season for Carson where he won three tournaments on the men’s professional International Racquetball Tour (IRT) and finished as a runner-up at the National Doubles Championships. He finished the season as the #2-ranked player on the IRT, making it a solid decade of year-end finishes inside the Top 5.
The 2015-2016 IRT Season was quite successful for Diaz as well. The 23 year old won the U.S. National Men’s Doubles Championship in February with Jake Bredenbeck and in March captured the No. 2 Men’s Singles Division at the U.S. National Intercollegiate Championships. He finished the season on the IRT ranked 19th.
Doug Ganim, HEAD Penn’s National Indoor Promotions Manager, was inducted as the 58th member into the USA Racquetball Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the National Singles Racquetball Championships in Colorado over the weekend.
In addition to growing HEAD Penn Racquetball into the leading manufacturer in the sport over the past 28 years, Doug was the brainchild behind the UnitedHealthcare US OPEN Racquetball Championships. Later this year, the US OPEN will be contested for the 21st time and is the largest and most prestigious racquetball tournament on the annual calendar.
On the court, Ganim’s career accomplishments are equally impressive. Recognized as one of the greatest doubles players in the history of the sport, the left-side legend has won 14 U.S. National Doubles titles and a pair of singles age-division championships at the UnitedHealthcare US OPEN Racquetball Championships. During this run, Ganim reached the finals of the Men’s US TEAM Qualifying division at the National Doubles tournament eight times with four different partners!
On the international stage, Ganim won a gold medal at the 1999 Pan American Games and also took home gold at the 1988, 1990, 1992 International Racquetball Federation’s World Championships.
“It is truly an honor to receive this prestigious recognition,” said Ganim. “I have been blessed to have the sport of racquetball in my life since the age of 14. On court accomplishments have been fun but it is really all the great people I have had the pleasure to meet and know over the years that have brought me the most joy. Nearly all my best friends in life have come from the sport of racquetball!”
Ganim enjoyed his Hall of Fame induction with his wife Mary Beth and son Doug Jr.
