Sebastián Fernández (20), aka Patata, was born in San Diego, California. He started playing racquetball at age 9, driven by his father and brothers, who played in Tijuana. Its first coach was Angelica Rosales. Then came Aaron Embry, Jackie Paraíso, and David León. But the coach who marked his sports career was Arturo Martín. Patato came out world champion five times in Juniors, combining the singles and doubles categories. His racquetball idol is Alvaro Beltrán. But he is also a soccer fan and follows the career of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Patata currently combines his passion for racquetball with bodybuilding and his studies in civil engineering. He is in his second year of college and wants to continue playing whatever the university allows him most. He plans to continue training hard while studying and working in his father’s company. Her dream is to go as far as possible in racquetball. He typically trains 5 to 6 times a week and is trying to keep up with the same rhythm, although off the court, during the COVID-19 pandemic. His training partners and friends are Álvaro Beltrán, Alex Landa, and Favio Soto. His sponsors are Gearbox and Reaching Your Dream Foundation.
Although studies are the priority for Patata now, he hopes to take a sabbatical after graduating and then dedicate himself fully to racquetball.
Why do they call him Patata? Rafa Morales, another racquetball player, put him like this on the Mr. Potato face of Toy Story during Junior Nationals one year, and the name stayed with him forever!
