Junior Worlds Moved Up to July: Creates Fundraising Time Crunch
The 2011 USA Junior National Team was selected this month and will travel to the IRF Junior World Championships to be held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, July 24-30, 2011. We expect to have many returning athletes from last year’s World Championship team, and we hope to win the title again for the 4th straight year. Long story short, this year there is an incredible time crunch. The several-month fundraising window in past years has become just four weeks in 2011.
While the US preferred a more traditional date later in the year for the Junior Worlds, the Pan American Games in Mexico scheduled for the last half of October make November/December dates for Junior Worlds undesirable this year for many countries, since other countries’ coaches are the often the same individuals for both their adult and junior teams.
Junior Worlds has therefore been brought forward to July. The US Team was not even selected until late June at the Junior Olympics in Portland, Oregon. Players and their families will be faced with raising $1,500+ per player for the trip, right after footing the bill for getting their kids to the Nationals in Portland. Some kids and families were considering not participating in either event due to seemingly insurmountable financial constraints. We want to do everything we can to support our junior athletes’ racquetball dreams to represent their country in the Dominican Republic.
Players, parents, coaches and the USAR Junior Committee are all working hard at various fundraising projects as we speak. These projects include a fundraising page on the USA Racquetball website, corporate and manufacturer requests, fundraiser tournaments, etc. The on line link for the USA Junior Team fundraising effort is: http://bit.ly/nS7huD
Thank you so much for your continued support of the best Junior Racquetball Team in the World!
