Charitable Partner Spotlight: Live Like John

By IRT CEO, Mike Grisz

This article is the last, but not least, of the three articles in the series spotlighting the IRT’s charitable partners. I was pleased to talk to Wendall Pelham, founder, and leader of the Live Like John Foundation, and Hank Marcus, a recent inductee into the Racquetball Hall of Fame.

LLJ’s mission, per Wendall, has been to serve our nation’s Gold Star Families and Armed Forces Veterans. LLJ was conceived shortly after Wendall’s son, John, was killed in action on February 12, 2014, while serving with the US Army’s 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Special Forces Group. A week before John’s fatal mission, his last Facebook post to a friend was, “I can’t wait to play racquetball again.” John never got his chance.

Because of that statement, in partnership with the IRT, the SPC John A. Pelham Memorial Tournament of Champions racquetball tournament was started in Portland, Oregon, held each December at the Multnomah Athletic Club. Through the story of John’s life and sacrifice, it has become one of the premier racquetball events for the IRT and a great fundraiser for the LLJ Foundation.

The Covid-19 situation has seen a significant reduction in contributions. While donations are necessary for LLJ to continue its mission of serving our nation’s Gold Star Families and Armed Forces Veterans, LLJ understands the difficulties we are all experiencing as we try to navigate these difficult times.

I am especially looking forward to going to Portland in December to be involved in this great event and to support this outstanding organization.
