24th Annual UnitedHealthcare US OPEN Preview | By Kelly R. Diesel
The 24th annual UnitedHealthcare US OPEN is back and everyone in the entire International Racquetball Tour (IRT) community is more than ready for the action! From October 2-6, at the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, the greatest racquetball athletes in the world will all compete at the pinnacle of professional racquetball tournaments. With 94 entrants in the Men’s Pro Singles and 27 teams in the Men’s Pro Doubles this is sure to be one for the record books!
The 2019 UnitedHealthcare US Open will feature both IRT and Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) singles and doubles action. Over 725 athletes have signed up to compete at The Open and with over 9,000 passes sold already, the 24th annual UnitedHealthcare US OPEN is on pace to be the biggest US OPEN yet!
The Open is hosted by Tournament Director, and founder of the US OPEN, Doug Ganim. Ganim proposed the idea of a grand slam tournament like the US OPEN to the Board of Directors at the USA Racquetball association over 20 years ago. Being the determined go-getter type that Ganim is, he took on his proposal and forged the US OPEN into existence. For 24 years now, Ganim has run the biggest show in all of racquetball and he still works to fine tune all the details.
“Every year we (Ganim’s team) look at all the different aspects of the event and we make each aspect better,” Ganim said. “For many years now, we’ve improved every detail about the event 1,000 times over. The staff has grown three times the size since the first Open, the media coverage has increased and everything gets better as the years go on.” says Ganim.
He also mentioned that tickets to the US Open have been extended to both the Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA) and Vikings (NFL) and that some athletes have already stopped by to check out the venue! The Target Center will be packed all week long and with the athletes on the guest list, you won’t want to miss this premium event! The 24th Annual UnitedHealthcare US Open is set to rollout the action Wednesday night, October 2nd, and will continue throughout the weekend! Ganim encourages everyone in the racquetball community to take one last look at their calendar during the US Open, and try their best to make it to Minneapolis!
If you can’t make it to The Open, be sure to follow all the action online on the Tour’s YouTube and Facebook pages!
